What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are made of three parts that work together: a titanium screw, an abutment, and a crown. The post is surgically inserted into the jaw bone and acts just like a natural tooth root. Because of this secure foundation, dental implants are strong and are able to withstand the biting and chewing force of natural teeth.

Dental Implants At Premier Center

When you visit Premier Center for Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery, you will meet with Dr. Garibyan or Dr. Kuang. Our team will take 3D scans of your mouth and answer your questions regarding treatment. We will also discuss your anesthesia and sedation options. Most patients undergo IV sedation for implant placement. When undergoing IV sedation, you must arrange for someone to drive you to your surgical procedure, stay in the office, and drive you home afterward.

On the day of your surgery, we will safely administer the selected form of anesthesia. Your oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue, insert the implant post, and apply sutures as necessary. If you are receiving a same-day implant, your surgeon will extract the tooth and insert the implant post into the empty tooth socket.

Over the next few months, the implant will fuse with the jaw bone. You will return to our office to have the abutment placed if this was not done during the initial surgery. Once healed, your dentist will create and place the final crown and your implant treatment will be complete.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Prevent Bone Loss Without teeth roots, the jaw bone doesn’t receive stimulation and deteriorates over time. Dental implants provide the necessary stimulation, keeping the jaw bone strong. Preventing bone loss also helps preserve facial structures and prevent them from sagging.

No Dietary Restrictions Your implant is as strong and capable as a natural tooth. Enjoy all your favorite foods without any oral appliances or moving parts. Your implant stays in your mouth at all times, even while eating, unlike removable dentures or partials.

Long-Term Results Dental implants have high success rates and have the potential to last a lifetime. Keep your teeth and gums clean and attend checkups with your dentist to get the most out of your restorative treatment.

Preserve Dental Alignment Tooth loss can cause nearby teeth to shift into the open space, which can throw off the alignment of your other teeth. Dental implants prevent dental shifting, helping keep your teeth in their proper positions and promoting a healthy bite.

Types of Dental Implants

There are many types of tooth restoration available. During your consultation, your surgeon will create a treatment plan based around your specific oral health needs and financial situation.

  • Single Tooth Replacement. We can insert a dental implant anywhere in your mouth where you would like a new tooth and have enough jaw bone to support it.
  • Multiple Teeth Replacement. If you have several teeth that need to be replaced, we can insert multiple individual implants or an implant-supported bridge. Instead of relying on your existing teeth for support, an implant-supported bridge supports itself while also preventing bone loss.
  • Same-Day Dental Implants. We understand the anxiety that can sometimes come with needing a tooth extracted. If you have enough jaw bone, we can insert a dental implant immediately following tooth extraction, so you don’t have to go without a tooth and can reduce the number of appointments necessary.
  • Teeth in a Day. Our surgeons can provide you with a brand new smile in just one visit. By using several implant posts, we secure a fixed denture in one or both arches for a fully functioning and beautiful new smile you will love.
  • Zygomatic Implants. Zygomatic implants replace teeth in the upper jaw and are inserted into the zygomatic bone, or cheek bone. This is ideal for patients who lack sufficient bone in the upper jaw but who still desire implants.
  • Pterygoid Implants. Patients who require upper jaw implants but who lack sufficient bone and are not suitable for a sinus lift procedure may receive pterygoid implants. These implants are inserted into the pterygoid plate in the skull and overcome the need for augmentation procedures.

Dental Implants Frequently Asked Questions

On average, dental implants can last for several decades. By maintaining proper oral hygiene and taking care of your implants, they can potentially last a lifetime.

Patients with periodontal disease, significant jaw bone loss, or who have suppressed immune systems may not qualify for implants. Through the use of bone grafting treatments, we are able to help more patients become candidates for dental implants. If you were previously told that you cannot receive dental implants, we invite you to contact us. Our surgeons may be able to help you qualify.

We offer anesthesia and sedation options to ensure a comfortable, calm surgical experience. Most patients report little to no discomfort throughout dental implant surgery and recovery.

There is no maximum age for a dental implant. As long as you have an adequate jaw bone, you can receive a dental implant at any age. The minimum recommended age for implants is typically after the jaw stops developing, which is during the late teens or early twenties.
